What to know about neobank statements

App-based banks and money transfer accounts behave differently from a high street current account. One account often holds balances in several currencies, and the PDF statement either covers a single currency or prints one section per currency, each with its own opening and closing balance. Adding a pound row to a euro balance would make the check meaningless, so we keep each currency on its own: the running balance is tested within a currency, and the Excel file gets one sheet per currency with a summary sheet in front.

Currency conversions are the hardest rows. Moving money from one balance to another appears twice, as an amount out of the first currency and an amount into the second, usually with the exchange rate and any fee printed in the description or on an extra line. Card payments made abroad can show the original amount and the converted amount together. We take the amount that moved the balance of the section being read, and keep the rest of the text so the conversion can still be traced.

These statements are generated on demand in the app or on the web, so you pick the period and the currencies when you create one. Wise, for example, caps each statement at 365 days, so a longer period needs several files, and the file name rarely says which currency it holds. Fees often appear as separate rows right after the payment they belong to. Dates may include a time, and the time zone is the one set on the account. Most of these providers also offer CSV, and Wise adds XLSX, MT940, QIF and CAMT.053 on the web. Those files are fine for a quick look; accountants still tend to ask for the PDF because it is the statement the provider issues as a formal record. The bank pages below explain how to get each one.
